Magic is the ability to manifest supernatural effects through a connection to the Veil. This connection is represented by Anima, which measures how strongly a character remains connected to their soul.
Magically active characters generally express their abilities in one of two ways.
Spellcasters use their Anima to manifest effects beyond themselves through Spellcasting. Their spells are organized into Schools of Magic. They may also perform Ritual Magic, interact with spirits through Summoning, or use other practices allowed by their Tradition.
Mystics turn their magical potential inward. Instead of casting spells, they develop Mystic Powers that enhance or transform their own capabilities.
Most magically active characters are either Spellcasters or Mystics. Rare individuals capable of both are known as Hybrids.
Magic does not use a pool of expendable mana. Casting instead creates Strain, temporarily stressing the connection between the caster and their soul. More powerful manifestations create more Strain, and repeatedly casting beyond what the caster can safely tolerate can cause Fatigue or Wounds.
Different Traditions explain magic, the Veil, spirits, and the soul in very different ways. The rules describe how these phenomena function mechanically without requiring every tradition to agree on why they function.
