Anima Cost

Every augmentation lists an Anima Cost.

When an augmentation is installed, reduce the character’s current Anima by that amount. Anima lost to augmentation remains unavailable for as long as the augmentation is installed.

Anima Cost represents how severely the augmentation interferes with the character’s connection to their soul and the Veil. More invasive or poorly integrated augmentations generally cost more Anima, while biological or highly customized augmentations may cost less.

An augmentation cannot be installed if doing so would reduce the character’s Anima below 0.

Fractional Anima

Anima may be reduced by fractional amounts.

Record the character’s exact current Anima, including fractions. Whenever Anima is used to calculate a Success Target, Attribute Check, Strain threshold, derived value, or other whole-number game value, round it down to the nearest whole number.

For example, a character with 8.5 Anima records 8.5 Anima but uses 8 whenever Anima contributes to a Success Target or determines how much Strain they can tolerate.

Fractional Anima does not count as 0. Only an actual Anima value of 0 triggers the effects described below.

Reaching 0 Anima

If a character’s actual Anima is reduced to 0, their connection to their soul is completely severed.

The character becomes a Cyberzombie. Their higher thought, identity, and humanity are lost, leaving only instinct and basic drives behind.

A Cyberzombie is no longer a normal player character and should usually become an NPC under the GM’s control.
