Make a test when the outcome of an action is uncertain and success or failure would meaningfully affect the situation. If there is no meaningful uncertainty or consequence, no roll is required.
To resolve a test:
- Determine the appropriate Attributes and Skill.
- Calculate the Success Target and apply any modifiers.
- Roll d100 and any applicable Bonus Dice.
- A result equal to or below the Success Target succeeds. A higher result fails. Determine this before applying any Hot Bonus Dice.
- If the degree of success matters, calculate Hits and apply Bonus Hits as directed by their type.
- Resolve any Complication triggered by the roll.
A roll of 01–05 always succeeds, regardless of the Success Target. A roll of 96–00 always fails.
A successful test means the character accomplishes what they were attempting. Hits are only needed when the rules or situation care about how effectively they succeed.
